LETTER FROM ISTANBUL & DILEK TÜRKAN (GRC & TUR)

„Letter from Istanbul Project“ celebrates the traditional music of Western Anatolia and the Aegean Islands. This new project is the result of a long-standing musical friendship between Derya Türkan and Sokratis Sinopoulos. „Letter from Istanbul Project“ is a sophisticated fusion of traditional Turkish and Greek folk music such as Zeybek and Sirtos. Derya Türkan and Socrates Sinopoulos, two friends who play the same instrument; have made it their goal to discover the music of these countries by using the great cultural treasure that has lived in Istanbul for centuries.

The most important reason for discovering this great musical treasure is the place of the Istanbul Kamanche in this music. This group, which initially performed as an instrumental group, has revealed the richness of its large song repertoire with soloist Dilek Türkan. The songs and instrumental pieces that Dilek Türkan will perform are compiled from Istanbul’s rich and multicultural repertoire from the 18th, 19th and 20th century.

It consists of traditional folk songs and compositions. Derya Türkan will be accompanied by Socrates Sinopoulos on violin and Serkan Halili on kanun. Independent of the interstate politics of both countries, united by the universality of music, this is an invitation aimed at bringing people together. It reflects a cultural fraternisation, a melting pot, a relationship between people with love that defies all drawn borders.
