Peter Zelienka (CZ, SVK, DE)

 

Peter Zelienka was born in Zvolen, in the former Czechoslovakia. He began his musical education at the Prague Conservatory from 1977 to 1982, studying violin under Prof. V. Benda and chamber music with members of the Dvořák Quartet. From 1980 to 1982, he also studied conducting with Prof. J. Kasal and Vladimír Válek.

In 1982, Peter Zelienka emigrated to Germany and continued his studies at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Frankfurt/Main. There, he studied violin with Prof. E. Peinemann and Prof. I. Bieler and chamber music with Prof. D. Pandula. In 1984, he co-founded the Hába Quartet, in which he has played viola since 1999. With this ensemble, he has recorded numerous CDs for renowned labels such as Oehms Classics, NEOS, and Hänssler Classic, and performs regularly in China, Japan, and various European countries.

Since 1993, Peter Zelienka has been a member of the first violins in the hr-Sinfonieorchester. He completed his conducting training with Paavo Järvi and Neeme Järvi. Over the past two decades, he has conducted numerous ensembles, including the Frankfurt Strings, the Philharmonia Frankfurt, the Frankfurter Philharmoniker, the hr-Sinfonieorchester, the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, the Kammerorchester ’80 Prague, the Sinfonia Frankfurt, the Lufthansa Chamber Orchestra, and various youth orchestras in Hesse.

Notably, his conducting of the 2016 CD recording for PAN Classics, featuring works by Max Bruch, Ernst Bloch, and Nino Rota for double bass and orchestra with solo double bassist Boguslaw Furtok and the hr-Sinfonieorchester, stands out. Since 2021, Peter Zelienka has served as the permanent conductor of the Johann Strauss Orchestra Wiesbaden.

In addition to his conducting work, Peter Zelienka is active as an organizer of chamber concerts for Hessischer Rundfunk and other music projects, and as a moderator for numerous concerts. Since 2014, he has also been the head of the Orchesterakademie of the hr-Sinfonieorchester, establishing himself as a versatile and significant figure in the musical landscape.
